ARCreature

Project details

Programme
Research Cluster RC2

ARCreature is a robotic kinetic intelligent architectural system that aims to transform traditional architecture into a dynamic self-conscious process.

The ARCreature’s lightweight modules consist of linear rigid parts connected with robotic active and passive joints, as well as tensile fabric elements. The project explores the possibilities of robotic architecture through human - machine interaction using a capture system that provides feedback on external environmental conditions and the behaviour observations of surrounding individuals. The spatial generation logic takes into consideration the programmatic and activity requirements of the space and the robotic modules adapt their form in order to meet these functional needs.

These intelligent robotic modules can walk in the city, self-aggregate creating larger scale architectural structures and interact with citizens as multi-functional moving pavilions. The project aims to create a new dynamic urban infrastructure network to enhance the vitality of urban public space. It focuses on building a relationship between humans and robots, and through this process it works towards increasing the social interaction among individuals in the public space.

01

Material Actuation Principle and Robotic System

Material Actuation Principle

Material Actuation Principle

The conventional rigid frame is converted to a dynamic structure. The internal fixed surface is replaced with tensile fabric. By changing the fabric connection points, a complex 3D space is created.

Scope

The project was developed by working on three aspects at the same time: the robotic design, the space generation logic and the architectural system.

Robotic System

Robotic System

The joints are divided in two types to get better efficiency control. Simulation tools in CoppeliaSim are used to simulate the rotation of active joints creating the cyber physical twin of the robotic prototypes.

Robotic Prototype

Robotic Prototype

Different robotic behaviours can form different spatial effects. The crawling behaviour can be achieved through the control of motors, so that the robotic structure has the possibility of self-operation and self-assembly.

Multi-units Simulation

Multi-units Simulation

Different robotic units can be connected to each other to form multi-unit robotic structures. This way a higher level of spatial complexity and adaptability can be achieved.

Space Generation

Space Generation

Activity Space Generator

Activity Space Generator

Activities have different space requirements. They are split and can generate 2D patterns to simulate activity distribution. The robotic structure can generate the corresponding space based on this result.

Activity Space Catalogue

Behaviours Catalogue

Behaviours Catalogue

On the basis of generating space using patterns, the robotic modules express different behaviours achieving different spatial changes.

Behaviour Application

Behaviour Application

ARCreature attracts people to enter a site and follows them observing their moves and gathering patterns. Number of people is one of the input information for the space forming process.

Application Scenario

Application Scenario

ARCreature can become a shading space according to the sun angle, forming a childrens’ activity place. It can produce spatial changes in real time according to people's needs.

ARCreature - House Block Exhibition

ARCreature - House Block Exhibition

ARCreature generates a flexible dynamic space as an additional space layer in the House Block structure. It gives the users different sensory experiences and produces spatial changes through touch.

System’s Operation Mode

System’s Operation Mode

ARCreature’s process of space aggregation, according to functional needs and real-time activity observation during the 24-hour day cycle.

Scenario in City

Scenario in City

ARCreature forms an infrastructure network with different aggregation possibilities in many locations in the city by crawling, self-assembling, and disassembly.

Perception

Perception

ARCreature can produce corresponding rhythmical movements according to environmental factors and human motion.
