Civic Sensorium

Project details

Programme
Research Cluster RC15

The project seeks to capture and investigate the broad potential of human sensorium as analytical and design tool in Chinatown, with a prominent focus on the exploration of smell and visual collective experiences. For this purpose, it utilises social media analysis together with environmental and biometric sensing to offer a qualitative and quantitative representation of the sensorial perception of Chinatown in an attempt to reconstruct its collective memory.

The results propose the design of a virtual reality space that, constructed as an ecology of explicit sensorial experiences, explores the potentials and limits of combinatorial algorithms in a virtual reality environment acting as a blockchain archive of collective perceptions that can be explored as a meta-verse of infinite sensorial memories.

The process involves recording the live visual and smell experiences of visitors in Chinatown and conveying them in an immersive experience accessible online by the general audience. The sensorial data, visualised in the Infinite Chinatown, captures the spatial learning of the visitors in multi-dimensional archive that conveys the collective information at the granular scale.

Analysis

Analysis

Classification of Keywords

Dendogram showing classification of keywords for five senses, used for Data Scrapping from Social Media platform of Twitter.

Social Media Data Visualisation

Social Media Data Visualisation

The tweets are geolocated based on their classifications and evaluated to visualise a contour map representing attractiveness factor in the area.

Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) Sensor Data

The GSR sensor data and events from an exploratory walk on site are visualised on with a point cloud model of the street.

Smell Analysis

Smell Analysis

Smell experience in the area is analysed with 9 different gas sensors and visualised as an overlay of the 9 signals in a series of Smell-rose diagrams.

Visual Elements

The colour scape of the street is explored using average colors of 600 images from over the internet and studied with the spatial elements and significance of the area.

03

Multi-sensor Case

A case containing an Arduino setup with multiple sensors attached which can be carried along for data collection.

VR Platform Interface

VR Platform Interface

After data-collection the user can login onto the VR platform, complete their profile creation and annotate their experiences using the options provided on the interface.

Representing the Profoundness of Experience

The buildings represent the smell intensity data from sensors and profoundness rated by the user.

VR Simulation

VR Simulation

The generation process is simulated on behalf of various users, while inputting their annotations of the experiences with the buildings, on the platform.

VR Platform

VR Platform

The platform can be navigated and experienced by the general audience, exploring the explicit individual perceptions across the collective archive.
