As climate change has begun to irreversibly modify landscapes, the Arctic has seen a tourism boom. Dubbed as “Last Chance Tourism”, the allure of a disappearing Arctic has created a negative feedback loop - the more the landscapes disappears, the more tourists visit.

‘Chaser’ empowers indigenous Arctic communities economically and politically through a virtual tourism platform that both capitalises on this social phenomenon while creating a form of activism.

By recording the changing environments and building an environmental archive, unique content can be revisited and procedurally generated in creating immersive spectacle surfing experiences.

An algorithm termed word2vec trained on a climate data set drives the system, linking different spectacles that collapse scale, time, and distance, allowing for non-linear readings and experiences of climate change. Composite word clusters from the word2vec algorithm are solved with the “spectacle formula” we develop.

The platform amplifies fear of missing out (FOMO), delivering immersive experiences as well as using destructive game mechanics that recreate the ‘last chance’ effect.

The archive performs as a form of preservation that records climate change which can eventually grow into a data set for predicting future outcomes.
